Carolyn Abbott

Carolyn has been interested in fibers since she was a child, creating items from her mother’s sewing scraps.  She has explored various aspects of textiles, starting with picking a few boles of cotton on her grandparents' farm in Texas, scouring wool, dyeing it with natural dyes and weaving it into fabric, hand dyeing cotton, silk and rayon fabrics, and sewing many garments and quilts.

An Iowa State University graduate with a degree in Applied Art Education and an emphasis on fine crafts, she taught art in Seward, Nebraska for several years.
After moving to Minnesota her interest expanded to include quilting.

Her studio is in her home in Brainerd, Minnesota where she lives with her husband, Roy.  She originally formed Flying Colors Fabric and Design to market her line of hand-dyed fabrics known as "Transitions". Her designs have been published in “Better Homes and Gardens” and “American Quilter” magazines.  Her quilts have hung in the Fine Arts Building at the Minnesota State Fair, “Tactile Architecture” in Washington, D.C., and a number of regional exhibits.
